My son started kindergarten this year in August. He has been coloring with me since he was two years old. But, obviously he was young, and I expected him not to color in the lines and scribble. Now that he is almost six years old, he still just scribbles and doesn’t stay in the lines. What is wrong with him? Why won’t he color in the lines? If you are a parent, have you ever heard of a child not coloring in the lines at this age?

That is very normally. I babysit 4 5year olds and 2 six year olds I believe only one can stay in the line (and not that well) and she is a girl!

To generalize boys do tend to take longer than girls to get the idea of staying within the lines, however it will come. It seems that boys just rush through things more often than girls. Once he matures a bit you’ll be surprised at how, in a short time, he will turn a corner and be coloring within the lines. For a kindergartner it is not expected to be within the lines nor even free hand pictures to look exact – that robot may have a few extra arms.
