Making sure that your child is ready for kindergarten can help to ensure that your child’s first year of school will be a success. Before you  pack them up and send them off, you want to make sure that they are prepared to meet the challenges that they’ll face in the classroom.   You might want to contact your local school district to get a copy of the kindergarten standards for your specific state.  Now, go down the list of standards and start checking them off.

It is  important to use these standards as a guide to monitor your childs developmnet.  If you feel that your child is exhibiting a lack of normal development in any area,  contact your pediatrician and find out if it is anything you should be concerned about.

First, children should have basic understanding of how to take care of their own personal hygiene.  This includes using the bathroom correctly, eating correctly, washing hands, etc.  Children should also have mastered many social skills and be able to work with other children.  They should be able to follow instructions and directions.  Children should also show that they are ready for learning.  There is a variety of skills that they should master before entering kindergarten, as these will help them prepare for learning to read.  Finally, if you have any reservations regarding your child’s kindergarten readiness, talk to those in your immediate circle who can help you.  These include your child’s pediatrician, voluntary pre k teacher, preschool teacher, or those associated with your county’s school board.
